Masks from the huge volume of protective equipment dumped by hospitals and general public are being transformed into plastic bottles, car bumpers and clothes pegs.

A company in Cardiff has developed a method of melting down polypropylene into solid blocks that can be used to produce new plastic items.

The technology, originally designed to process the plastic wrappings in which sterile surgical equipment is packaged, is now being used to recycle facemasks. Eight NHS trusts, from Penzance to Harrogate, are using the firm’s Sterimelt machines.
